Many supernatural thrillers invent their own mythology, but the spiritual warfare in The Last Summer is drawn directly from the pages of ancient scriptural history. The battle fought in the quiet town of Carmel, Georgia, is an extension of a war that began at the very dawn of creation.
To understand the unseen forces at work in the Cosmic Mountain Chronicles, we have to look past modern Western traditions and step back into the Divine Council worldview of the ancient Near East.
Eden, Zion, and the “Navel of the Earth”
In the ancient biblical worldview, the Garden of Eden was not simply a lush, flat park; it was the “Cosmic Mountain”—the dwelling place of God where the earthly and the heavenly realms intersected. This location served as the original temple and the true “Navel of the Earth.” The geography of spiritual warfare often contrasts this true cosmic mountain (and later, Mount Zion) with epicenters of spiritual rebellion, such as Mount Hermon.
In The Last Summer, the antagonists attempt to subvert this ancient reality by turning Harmon’s Gorge into a “counterfeit cosmic mountain” and a “corrupted navel of the earth”. Their ultimate goal is to establish a dark throne and anchor a rebellious spiritual entity to our modern world.

The corporate antagonist, the Directorate, utilizes a Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit named Erebus to physically breach this subterranean prison. As this barrier is broken, the breach manifests as a heavy, grinding, hydraulic chant of the Biblical Hebrew word Tehom—the deep Abyss.
The Truth of the Nachash
When we read the Eden narrative in the English Standard Version, the translation of Nachash as “serpent” often masks a much deeper and more terrifying reality. The Nachash was not merely a literal snake in the grass, but a rebellious spiritual being and a former divine throne guardian.
This ancient concept serves as the blueprint for the enemy forces in the novel. The primary dark entity, Apollyon, is explicitly revealed to be a fallen member of the Benei Elohim (the Sons of God) who originally constituted the Divine Council. Apollyon physically possesses the ruined shell of the local mill owner, Saul Dempsey, attempting to reclaim the dominion he lost.
El Elyon vs. The Counterfeit
The climax of this unseen battle rests entirely on true spiritual authority. When the forces of Belial (the ancient identity of the lethal auditor Victor Cross) attempt to claim dominion over the town, they are confronted with a higher truth.
Pastor Ron Bennett invokes the name of El Elyon—God Most High—to strip the enemy of its false legal claim. He asserts that the resurrection of Christ has secured the earth and that there is only one true cosmic mountain. This earthly intercession is answered immediately in the unseen realm by a towering, bronze Malakh (heavenly warrior) who steps into the physical world to wage war against Apollyon above the dark altar.
The battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness.
